Ashwagandha, Stress & Sleep: What the KSM-66 Research Says

If your mind races the moment your head hits the pillow, the problem may not be sleep itself — it may be stress that never fully switched off. This is where ashwagandha, an adaptogenic herb used in Ayurveda for centuries, has drawn serious modern research attention.

What is an adaptogen?

Adaptogens are plants thought to help the body cope with everyday stress and stay in balance. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is the most-studied of them. Notice its species name — somnifera literally means “sleep-bringing.”

The cortisol link

Cortisol is your main stress hormone. It is supposed to be high in the morning and low at night. When it stays elevated in the evening, winding down becomes a battle. According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements, multiple trials have found that ashwagandha extracts significantly reduced stress and anxiety ratings and lowered serum cortisol compared with placebo (NIH ODS).

What the sleep research shows

Beyond stress, ashwagandha has been studied specifically for sleep. The NIH summary notes that a standardized root extract (KSM-66®, dosed at 300 mg twice daily) was associated with improvements in sleep quality and how quickly people fell asleep among adults with poor sleep. Benefits in the broader literature were most consistent at doses around 600 mg per day taken for at least 8 weeks — a reminder that adaptogens work gradually, not overnight.

Why we chose KSM-66®

“Ashwagandha” on a label can mean very different things. KSM-66® is a full-spectrum root-only extract standardized to a consistent level of withanolides (the active compounds), and it is the form behind much of the best human research. Using a clinically studied, standardized extract is how we make sure what is in the bottle reflects what was actually tested.

Important safety notes

We want you to use ashwagandha wisely:

  • It is generally well tolerated for up to about 3 months; long-term safety is less studied.
  • It may affect thyroid hormone levels — talk to your doctor if you have a thyroid condition.
  • Rare cases of liver issues have been reported.
  • Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

As always, check with your healthcare provider first, especially if you take medication.

The bottom line

Ashwagandha targets the stress half of the stress-sleep cycle — helping the body calm an over-active stress response so rest can follow more naturally. That is why it sits at the heart of our Sleep + Stress 40+ formula, alongside magnesium bisglycinate and L-theanine.
