If you slept soundly for decades and now find yourself wide awake at 3 a.m. — heart a little fast, mind switched on, maybe throwing off the covers — you are not imagining it, and you are far from alone. Sleep genuinely changes during the years around menopause, and the reason sits in your hormones. Here is what is happening, and how the right nutrients can support you through it.
The progesterone drop: losing your built-in calm
Progesterone is often called the body’s natural “calming” hormone, and for good reason. It is converted into neuroactive metabolites — chiefly allopregnanolone — that act on GABA-A receptors, the same calming, sleep-promoting system in the brain that many relaxation aids target. A 2022 review in Sleep Medicine Reviews describes progesterone as having a “potent sedative and hypnotic effect” through this pathway (Sleep Medicine Reviews).
During perimenopause, progesterone is usually the first hormone to decline. As it falls, you lose some of that GABA-mediated calm — which is why sleep can become lighter, more broken, and harder to fall back into after a night waking.
The estrogen rollercoaster: temperature and mood
Estrogen does not simply fade — in perimenopause it fluctuates unpredictably, and that turbulence matters for sleep in two big ways:
- Temperature control. Estrogen helps regulate the body’s thermostat. As it withdraws, vasomotor symptoms — hot flashes and night sweats — emerge in roughly 80% of women, and these nocturnal surges fragment sleep from the outside in (Sleep Medicine Reviews, 2022).
- Mood and serotonin. Estrogen modulates the serotonin system, which is tied to both mood and sleep. When estrogen dips, a busier, more anxious mind at night can follow.
Put together, the perimenopausal shift is a kind of perfect storm for rest: less calming progesterone, plus temperature and mood swings from estrogen. Understanding that is the first step — because it means the goal is to gently support your nervous system, not to fight your own body.

How the three ingredients meet this moment
Our Sleep + Stress 40+ formula was built around three research-backed ingredients chosen for exactly this stage of life.
Magnesium bisglycinate — the calm mineral many midlife women run low on
Magnesium supports normal nervous-system function and helps the body regulate the calming neurotransmitter GABA — the very system that fading progesterone leaves under-supported. Many adults, and particularly women in midlife, do not reach the recommended magnesium intake. In a 2025 randomized, placebo-controlled trial, 250 mg of magnesium as bisglycinate improved insomnia-severity scores, with the biggest benefit in people whose dietary magnesium was low to begin with (PubMed). We chose the bisglycinate form because it is well absorbed and gentle on digestion, and the glycine it is bound to is itself a calming amino acid.
KSM-66® ashwagandha — studied specifically in perimenopausal women
Ashwagandha is one of the few calming botanicals tested in exactly this population. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 100 perimenopausal women aged 45–55, 600 mg/day of ashwagandha root extract for 8 weeks was associated with a significant improvement in overall menopause-rating-scale scores, fewer hot flashes and less night-time sweating, and improvements in mood and anxiety (Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research, 2021). As an adaptogen, ashwagandha is best known for supporting a healthy stress response — a helpful thing when a busy, wired mind is keeping you up.
L-theanine — calm without sedation
L-theanine, the amino acid from green tea, promotes a relaxed-but-alert state (it nudges the brain’s calming alpha-wave activity) without making you groggy. In a randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial in adults with an average age of 48, 200 mg/day of L-theanine for 4 weeks improved sleep-quality scores and lowered anxiety (Nutrients, 2019). That gentle, non-drowsy calm is exactly what a racing 3 a.m. mind needs.
An honest, gentle note
These are supportive nutrients, not sedatives or hormone therapy. They work quietly, over time, as part of a good evening routine — and they tend to help most when your levels were low to begin with. If your sleep or perimenopausal symptoms are severe or sudden, please talk with your healthcare provider, who can look at the fuller picture.
Rest, your way
Sleep after 40 is not a personal failing — it is biology in transition. With a little support for your nervous system and a consistent wind-down, deeper, calmer nights are absolutely within reach. A calmer, brighter you.
